Day 29 · 06 Sept 09 · Surprised Super Hero

Surprised Super Hero

I’ve been practicing drawing people and this is where I land. Although I am by no means a master of the human figure I find drawing it boring. It’s been done to death. That doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate what other artists do with it, but I tend to have more fun and be more successful with “non-traditional” shaped people.

I think I may spend some more time with my more cartoon flavored renderings for a while. Drawing the human form feels more like a chore. Necessary, but not how I want to spend my time.

Thanks for lookin’.

Shrub Based Robot

Shrub Based Robot

I was in Dallas today driving through some residential areas when I noticed a tree/shrub thingy shaped like this here robot. I thought to myself, “Ya know? That looka lika robot.” So I drew it.

Just a quick sketch. I know it’s not as polished as some of my previous offerings, but I’m trying to work more on my wireframes of people. Since it’s not very interesting to look at a bunch of stick figures I threw this one in for ya.

Day 27 · 03 Sept 09 · Ninja

September 3rd, 2009 No comments

I think from this point forward I’m going to be uploading loose sketches as well as “finished work”. I’m tired of typing “Day X” over and over again too, so I think the title will suffice. Sorry to all you ” consistency nuts” out there. I need to figure out a way that for WordPress to append the day (or post #) in the title automatically, because, on a good day, I can only count to 11.

Any way, have you ever seen Well, a bunch of ridiculously talented artists draw a different character each week and post it. I’d like to eventually become part of that crowd so I thought I’d just start drawing some of the subjects they’ve drawn to see how it goes. I chose the ninja. And you can tell the influence of the drawergeeks in my lower-left triangle ninja.

I thought the best way to depict the ninja is by drawing a forest of bamboo, because they’re sneaky like that. Plus if you actually saw a ninja you’d be dead within the next few seconds anyway. Maybe it’s just my way of getting out of a challenging sketch.

On another note. I attended my first Drink and Draw meeting tonight. I met some cool artists and we talked about drawing, other artists, techniques and general stuff. A good time was had by all. Or at least by me and that’s all that really matters in the end.

Day 26 · 01 Sept 09 · Off Register

September 1st, 2009 1 comment

Day 26. This is the last day of this sketchbook. It’s been fun and challenging.

Today I tried 3 new things:

  1. A retro style cartoon.
  2. An off-register type coloring.
  3. Ink with a real brush not a brush pen.

Those new things led to understand 3 things:

  1. Retro is cool.
  2. Off-register coloring is hard with markers.
  3. I’m heavy handed with a brush.

I think that what makes an artist experienced is his/her ability to fix mistakes. Cover them up so that no one can tell. I did a lot of fixin’ because of that darn brush.

If you want to see some inspiring brush work check out this guy: Mitch Breitweiser.

I will continue to do this blog, but I haven’t decided whether or not I will move into Photoshop painting, which is my ultimate goal, or keep up the traditional sketching. Having the physical sketchbook has helped because it gives me a tangible goal. I could do both, but who knows. Time will tell.

See you tomorrow.

Day 25 · 31 Aug 09 · Big Shoes?

Big Shoes?

Big Shoes?

Day 25. 1 day left in my book.

So why are his shoes so big? You got me. I guess it’s so they match his sweatshirt.

I like that he’s surprised at how huge his feet are. Didn’t he notice that when he put his shoes on this morning? He was probably doing it in the dark and just going through the motions. That’s what I do. He’s lucky they’re both the same color. In my case I’m likely to put on 2 different shoes when I get up at the early hour of 8 am.

Speaking of 8 am, who decided that’s when work should start? And who decided that we should all work 8 + hours a day? That’s too much work. I think we should all rebel and demand 4 hour work days for the same pay. Then we can play and draw more.

Who’s coming with me?
