Octopus for Jon’s 50th

February 13th, 2011 No comments

Octopus for Jon's 50thOk granted this is not a sketch, but it is my first official painting. I used acrylics on a clay board.

I made this for my good friend Jon. It’s been done for quite a while, but I couldn’t show anyone until now. This was unveiled, with several other pieces of art from his friends, at his surprise birthday party this weekend. So now it’s available for everyone to see.

Cephalo Pod

“I’m purple!” That’s what he’d say if he was real. I painted this in SketchBook Pro on my iPad. It was a long process. I don’t know how to draw/paint quickly.

Mr. Squiggles

February 9th, 2010 No comments

SquigglesMeet Mr. Squiggles. He likes to hang out around old seafaring ships. There’s lots of good eats in those parts.

We got lucky, it’s rare to find one of his kind which is probably why he looks surprised. There’s only about 7 of them alive. Luckily for him, and us, they live for a very long time and are hard to kill so they don’t reproduce very often. Plus they’re all related and that would be weird.

I saw some old footage of one being attacked by a shark and upon the chomp it just squiggled out like Jell-O between the teeth. It reminded my of those sticky booger things you can throw against the wall and watch ‘em slink down.

Mo Sketches. Mo Problems.

We had a marathon meeting this afternoon. Fortunately for me all the tables were covered in paper. Drawing ensued and lives were saved.

Day 31 · 10 Sept 09 · A Couple O’ Squids

Squid 2

Squids. I love ‘em. Especially when they have one eye and no idea what’s going on. I think I’ll redraw #2. I like how one of the front tentacles is curled up towards his face. I think I’ll make that more exaggerated on the next one. I could also see that design as a glass dome with a free floating brain in it.

I tried out some new markers on #1 there. It’s doing OK. I’m using a different sketchbook than the one used in the first 20-something days. You may notice the markers appearing a bit different. I’ll learn to work with it. I think.

I saw 9 tonight. Ridiculous. The character designers on that movie are brilliant. I’m not just talking about the main characters either. All the little robots and bad guys were great. Mostly out of left field too. How do they come up with that stuff?

Also saw a trailer for Astro Boy. I will definitely be studying some robot design in that movie.

You are now free to go about your day.

Squid Gurl

Squid Gurl

Day 13. Almost 2 whole weeks. For this one I chose to be more colorful again. I think I’ll go to grayscale pencil next time.

I don’t really have much to say about Squid Gurl. She’s a girly squid thingy. She’s purple, has tentacles, eyelashes, hair, et al.

Pencils, ink and paper. Coloring like this can really blow through pencils. I’m gonna have to by some blue pencils now.

Later, taters.

Day 6 · 12 Aug 09 · Cephy

Day 6. Today is my 32nd birthday, so here’s a party animal for y’all. He might be a little drunk. The dark in the background kind of reminds me of squid ink so maybe he’s a party pooper.

I almost had this in before midnight, but my scanner was not down for that.

Happy birthday to me. Here’s to you Cephy!
