Day 36 · 21 Sept 09 · I’m Back!

I'm Back

I'm Back

See? What did I tell you? Leaf ain’t goin’ nowhere. You just gotta have faith in the system. I wonder how long it will take Pudge to notice? Will Leaf get to blossom before getting cut down again? I don’t know.

I like to think that Pudge may have gone on that vacation he’s been thinking about for years. After all, his “chores” are all done.

Day 35 · 18 Sept 09 · Ha!

September 18th, 2009 No comments

Pudge thinks he’s had the last laugh. Truth be told Pudge doesn’t really laugh that much anyway. Everyone’s entitled to a little joy in life even if we don’t agree with it, right?

Now, word around the campfire is people don’t like Pudge. I say we give the ol’ chap a chance. Let’s not be hasty in our judgement. We don’t know why he acts this way. His past got him here. Something had to happen to make him this way. You just don’t get born angry. I bet if we look back we’ll start understand and even sympathize with Pudge.

Maybe not. Maybe he’s just a jerk and that’s all there is to it. Y’all without sin can cast the first stone, but I for one am the type o’ guy to give him the benefit of the doubt.

So, does this mark the end for poor ol’ Leaf? I wouldn’t bet on it. Tune in next time for more as the saga continues.

Side note: I think I may need to change my site to Sketch Du Every Other Jour. Stick with me. I’ll get on a schedule.

Oh, and one more thing. This pic was taken with my phone, but i’ll give it a proper scan in the next day or so.

Day 34 · 16 Sept 09 · Pudge Means Business

Pudge Means Biz

Pudge Means Biz

Shield your eyes kids. That ol’ Pudge is up to no good again.

Do you think this might just get rid of that Leaf for good? Well, no. It wouldn’t make for a very good story if all it took was a pair of shears to end it all. I gotta drag this thing out.

I tell ya what though. That Pudge ain’t got no love for Leaf. Brutal, that Pudge. Even the Gopher’s keeping his distance.

Day 33 · 15 Sept 09 · Dang Leaf!

Dang Leaf!

Dang Leaf!

That dang Leaf. Why’s she always looking at Pudge like that? Taunting him. “Oh, look at me! I’m alive! And there’s nothin’ you can do about it!” How’s Pudge supposed to be miserable with Leaf pokin’ its stupid nose in his business all the time? What a jerk, that Leaf.

Why’s Pudge so angry anyway? What did Leaf do to him? Leaf just sits there. Drinking water, hanging out and doing leafy things. It’s not Leaf’s fault she happened to be created on that particular tree in that particular time. She’s just a product of her environment. Leaf’s just like the rest of us. Playing the hand she’s dealt.

I’ve got a bad feeling about this. My spidey-sense is telling me Leaf needs to watch her back. Pudge is very determined. Right or wrong, he’s determined. And we all know that bad-attitude + determination = bad news bears. That’s a lotta “bad”s in one train of thought. Well, there ought to be. It looks like a bad situation on the horizon. Runons, you say? You bet!

Any-whozzle-bees. This is my first digital sketch on this blog. While drawing traditionally I kept thinking that it would be so much easier if I was doing it in Photoshop. Tonight, sketching in Photoshop, I kept thinking it would be so much easier if I was doing it traditionally. I just can’t win against myself.

Either way, I’m pleased with the result. In the process I almost trashed it a couple of times, consulted several tutorials online that ended up being a complete waste of time, and uttered a handful choice words. A few hours later and here we are.

Day 32 · 10 Sept 09 · God Bless Eastman and Laird

September 10th, 2009 No comments

Yes indeed. I used to draw these guys all the time when I was in junior high. I might even say that I drew them better back then. I drew a lot more often. Hmmm. Imagine where’d I’d be now if I’d kept up with it.

I always loved the blocky/sketchy look of the art in those old TMNT comics. Now I look at them and realize what geniuses they were at value and shading.

These sketches are from Eastman and Laird’s Teenage Mutant Nina Turtles Volume 1, Book 32. I suppose I ought to mention that all things TMNT are licensed and copyrighted to Eastman and Laird or whoever may have purchased the rights yada yada yada. Don’t sue me.

Day 30 · 08 Sept 09 · Randomness

September 8th, 2009 No comments

Here’s a few sketches from today. I like the jelly bean guy.

I think I’m at a spot now where I’m struggling and I hope it’s the kind that I can push through and come out better on the other side.

I know I haven’t been militant about posting everyday like I was, but I’m still keeping at it.

Day 29 · 06 Sept 09 · Surprised Super Hero

Surprised Super Hero

Surprised Super Hero

I’ve been practicing drawing people and this is where I land. Although I am by no means a master of the human figure I find drawing it boring. It’s been done to death. That doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate what other artists do with it, but I tend to have more fun and be more successful with “non-traditional” shaped people.

I think I may spend some more time with my more cartoon flavored renderings for a while. Drawing the human form feels more like a chore. Necessary, but not how I want to spend my time.

Thanks for lookin’.

Day 27 · 03 Sept 09 · Ninja

September 3rd, 2009 No comments

I think from this point forward I’m going to be uploading loose sketches as well as “finished work”. I’m tired of typing “Day X” over and over again too, so I think the title will suffice. Sorry to all you ” consistency nuts” out there. I need to figure out a way that for WordPress to append the day (or post #) in the title automatically, because, on a good day, I can only count to 11.

Any way, have you ever seen Well, a bunch of ridiculously talented artists draw a different character each week and post it. I’d like to eventually become part of that crowd so I thought I’d just start drawing some of the subjects they’ve drawn to see how it goes. I chose the ninja. And you can tell the influence of the drawergeeks in my lower-left triangle ninja.

I thought the best way to depict the ninja is by drawing a forest of bamboo, because they’re sneaky like that. Plus if you actually saw a ninja you’d be dead within the next few seconds anyway. Maybe it’s just my way of getting out of a challenging sketch.

On another note. I attended my first Drink and Draw meeting tonight. I met some cool artists and we talked about drawing, other artists, techniques and general stuff. A good time was had by all. Or at least by me and that’s all that really matters in the end.

Day 26 · 01 Sept 09 · Off Register

September 1st, 2009 1 comment

Day 26. This is the last day of this sketchbook. It’s been fun and challenging.

Today I tried 3 new things:

  1. A retro style cartoon.
  2. An off-register type coloring.
  3. Ink with a real brush not a brush pen.

Those new things led to understand 3 things:

  1. Retro is cool.
  2. Off-register coloring is hard with markers.
  3. I’m heavy handed with a brush.

I think that what makes an artist experienced is his/her ability to fix mistakes. Cover them up so that no one can tell. I did a lot of fixin’ because of that darn brush.

If you want to see some inspiring brush work check out this guy: Mitch Breitweiser.

I will continue to do this blog, but I haven’t decided whether or not I will move into Photoshop painting, which is my ultimate goal, or keep up the traditional sketching. Having the physical sketchbook has helped because it gives me a tangible goal. I could do both, but who knows. Time will tell.

See you tomorrow.

Day 25 · 31 Aug 09 · Big Shoes?

Big Shoes?

Big Shoes?

Day 25. 1 day left in my book.

So why are his shoes so big? You got me. I guess it’s so they match his sweatshirt.

I like that he’s surprised at how huge his feet are. Didn’t he notice that when he put his shoes on this morning? He was probably doing it in the dark and just going through the motions. That’s what I do. He’s lucky they’re both the same color. In my case I’m likely to put on 2 different shoes when I get up at the early hour of 8 am.

Speaking of 8 am, who decided that’s when work should start? And who decided that we should all work 8 + hours a day? That’s too much work. I think we should all rebel and demand 4 hour work days for the same pay. Then we can play and draw more.

Who’s coming with me?
